Primary Promise

ESLA’S ‘FUTURES GATEWAY’ CAREER PROGRAMME REACHES OUT TO PRIMARIES

In the biggest event and the only one of its kind in the North West, ESLA’s annual Careers Fair welcomed just under 400 local primary school children to make sure individual advice and careers guidance starts early in South Liverpool.

This unique opportunity to meet 43, local and national employers and educational providers forms just one aspect of the Academy ‘Futures Gateway’ Programme. Our careers promise is to ensure our students are guided into Further Education, Higher Level Apprenticeships or employment in order to fully achieve their, ambitions, aspirations hopes and dreams.
Students started the day with a presentation launch, a fun quiz aimed at engaging them in the career research process followed by activities to actively involve children as young as 7 in the rich and varied opportunities open to them in their future. The day provided them with the opportunity to explore education, training and career ideas by engaging face to face with exhibitors and this approach proved to be a huge success. There was a real buzz in the fair throughout the day, so much so we had to work hard to get children away from the stands and back on their coaches!

Take up for the day was huge, with 800 students wishing to join us for the day. To ensure we keep our primary careers promise, our Careers and Employability Manager Tony Murphy along with some 6th formers will be visiting local primary schools in the coming months to ensure the ‘Futures Gateway’ careers programme reaches out to all 800 as they deliver a number of hands on career workshops and talks.

OUR OWN YEAR 11 AND 6TH FORM STUDENTS ARE ALSO MAKING IMPORTANT DECISIONS ABOUT THEIR FUTURE

So it was essential to ensure local providers of apprenticeships, training and volunteering supported the event. We were pleased to welcome a number of universities who provided real insight into the options available at this level. Local colleges and training providers were at hand to ensure full understanding of the variety of opportunities for all interests wider than the traditional academic route. It was great to welcome such a wide range of organisations offering essential advice.

The LionHeart Challenge

ESLA SHORTLISTED FOR ECHO TEAM ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

This term, Year 9 students demonstrated their entrepreneurial excellence by excelling in the renowned LionHeart Challenge supported by the
Academy’s close relationship with South Liverpool Homes.

Teams of 10 competed to design, cost and present their business ideas to a panel of prestigious judges from the local business community. The challenge itself was chosen as a national flagship by the National Learn and Skills Council and proved to be extremely thought provoking and rewarding for the students who took part. Helping students to develop their business ideas were a team of highly skilled and dedicated Business Coaches including from South Liverpool Homes.

THE AIM OF ESLA’S ‘FUTURES GATEWAY PROGRAMME’ IS TO INSPIRE STUDENTS AND HELP THEM EXPLORE OPTIONS, WHICH THEY MAY NOT BE EXPOSED TO IN THEIR DAILY LIVES AND EXPERIENCES

Councillor Nick Small judged at the event and commented on “the positive effects of social enterprise amongst students who displayed real team ethic, confidence and an awareness of social and moral issues in the community.”

Students had to identify a specific community group to design an innovative business proposal aimed at enhancing the quality of life for their identified group. Ideas ranging from ‘bags for life’
aimed at supporting the homeless, to support network ‘swap shops’ for the elderly were put forward to the judging panel who had the difficult job of picking an overall winning team.
The winning team were delighted to be crowned LionHeart Champions, proving just how innovative and creative young minds can be.
‘By participating in this challenge, our students gained valuable skills and self-assurance that will hopefully inspire a new generation of local entrepreneurs. We believe these opportunities increase students ambitions and skill set to prepare them for the world of work and we were delighted to welcome the Lion Heart team who we hope will visit us again soon.’ Mrs St John, Assistant Head of School.

THE EVENT FORMS PART OF OUR OXBRIDGE SCHOLARS SCHEME

This provides students from year 9 upwards the opportunity to visit and learn at Russell Group universities including
Oxford and Liverpool Universities. We have developed truly invaluable partnerships, which extend the programme outside the Academy, and provide students with opportunities to work in local industry whilst still in school. There is a real buzz to the programme with students effusive about the impact of having so many outside influences and professionals with real life experiences in school to guide, motivate and inspire them. The impact was recognised by Ofsted in May 2016 who stated, “particularly impressive is that 74% of students have been offered places at university compared to 43% last year, and 28% of those are from Russell Group Universities.”

FUN ON THE SLOPES

SKI TRIP TO COURMAYEUR, ITALY

Chaplain Andrew and Miss Waldron led the school ski trip to Courmayeur in Italy this February. The students had a fantastic time and by the end of the 6 days their skiing had improved enormously. The top group enjoyed exhilarating skiing down infamous red runs, mogul fields (skiing round and over bumps) and some challenging black runs. The beginners group also did
well, and by the end of the week, despite some aches and pains, they were all snowploughing well down the slopes.
